How Does DNA Affect Our Health?

National DNA Day commemorated the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, and the discovery of DNA’s double helix in 1953. DNA is the genetic code of life. Genes and family health history play a role in almost all diseases, which  result from the interaction of our genes with diet, medications, physical activity, infections, and the environment. Click here for  information on the role of genomics in selected diseases. Consult our family history page on how to collect, share and act on your family history to improve health throughout life.

Knowing and acting on your family health history is an important way to protect your health. Collect your family health history and share it with your doctor at your next visit.
Your doctor can use it to develop a more complete picture of your health and your risk factors for disease. Together you can work on ways to reduce that risk.
