Multivitamins/minerals are the most commonly used dietary supplements, with close to half of American adults taking them. Here are some things to know about these popular products:
- You may not need one. Most people can get all the vitamins and minerals they need through healthy eating. However, some people who don’t get enough vitamins and minerals from food alone, or who have certain medical conditions, might benefit from taking this type of supplement.
- They can increase your chances of getting too much of some nutrients. This is especially true for people who take more than just a basic once-daily product.
- They’re not standardized. Their composition varies from brand to brand and product to product. You can find out what’s in a supplement by reading its Supplement Facts label.
- There’s no convincing evidence that they prevent chronic diseases. People with healthier diets and lifestyles are more likely to take supplements, making it hard to identify any benefits from their use.
