It’s well-established that counseling and medication can help people quit smoking. But what about dietary supplements and other natural products? Can they make quitting easier?
For dietary supplements, the answer seems to be no. Several supplements, such as S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), lobeline, and St. John’s wort, have been considered, but there’s no current evidence that any of them is useful.
What’s more promising is the research on cytisine, a natural product used in central and eastern European countries as an aid to quitting smoking. Cytisine has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but there’s evidence it can help smokers quit.
NCCIH partnered with cytisine’s manufacturer to develop some of the scientific evidence that FDA will need to decide whether to approve it as a smoking cessation treatment. Further research on cytisine is in progress.
