If you have high blood cholesterol, you may have wondered whether herbal supplements might help to lower it.
Research suggests that certain herbal products, such as flaxseed, green tea, soy protein supplements, and garlic, may indeed have cholesterol-lowering effects. However, the effects tend to be small—much smaller than those of medicines that are prescribed to lower blood cholesterol levels.
Other herbal products, such as artichoke extract, policosanol, and guggulipid, haven’t been shown to lower cholesterol levels.
It’s important to follow your health care provider’s instructions on how to manage your cholesterol levels. Don’t take herbal supplements in place of cholesterol-lowering medicine.
