Can researchers mimic the effect of calorie restriction?

Healthy Aging Highlights: Information on healthy aging & more from the National Institute on Aging at NIH.
Researchers have long studied the health benefits of a variety of eating patterns. Recently you may have heard of: calorie restriction, which involves reducing average daily caloric intake below what is typical; intermittent fasting; or eating less at some or all meals. Studies are currently underway to learn more about exactly what happens to human cells when a person follows a calorie restrictive eating plan.

But what if a person is not healthy enough or otherwise unable to follow a plan like this? Scientists are trying to identify biological compounds that mimic the effects of this eating pattern as an alternate way of getting the same benefits.

Check out this research story on our website to learn more about calorie restriction and the future of potential therapies to mimic its benefits.
