Healthy Aging Highlights: Information on healthy aging & more from the National Institute on Aging at NIH.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis among older people. It occurs when the tissue that cushions the ends of bones within joints (cartilage), breaks down and wears away leaving bones that rub against each other. It most commonly affects the hands, lower back, neck, and weight-bearing joints like knees, hips, and feet.

Symptoms may include:
  • Joint pain, swelling, and tenderness
  • Stiffness after getting out of bed
  • A crunching feeling or sound of bone rubbing on bone
