Spinal manipulation, also called spinal manipulative therapy, is a technique where practitioners use their hands or a device to apply a controlled thrust to a joint of the spine. Most spinal manipulations are done by chiropractors, but other licensed professionals may also do them.
Spinal manipulation is one of several nondrug therapeutic options recommended by the American College of Physicians for treating acute or chronic low-back pain.
Spinal manipulation is relatively safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. The most common side effects are temporary muscle soreness, stiffness, or a temporary increase in pain.
