At least 500,000 people in the United States have Parkinson’s disease, a movement disorder that causes symptoms such as trembling, stiffness, and poor balance and coordination. There’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but conventional treatment may help control symptoms for a limited period. Some people with Parkinson’s disease also try complementary health approaches.

Several mind and body practices have been studied for Parkinson’s disease:
  • There’s limited evidence that tai chi may help improve balance in some people with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Interventions involving dance have shown promise in helping to improve balance, mobility, and quality of life.
  • Research on acupuncture and massage therapy is limited; there’s no strong evidence that either of these approaches helps to reduce symptoms.
