Complementary health approaches have not been shown to cure cancer or cause it to go into remission, but they may be helpful for managing cancer symptoms and treatment side effects.

For example, mindfulness-based stress reduction may help people with cancer relieve anxiety, stress, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Massage therapy, performed with appropriate precautions, might help to relieve symptoms such as pain, nausea, anxiety, and depression, although the evidence for its benefits isn’t conclusive. Acupuncture may help relieve nausea and vomiting.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, be sure to consult your health care providers before using any complementary health approach. They can help you make sure that all aspects of your care work together and that all necessary precautions are taken.
