Order Free Publications: Oral care—Tips for caregivers

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR): Part of the National Institutes of Health

Caregivers play an important role in helping maintain their care partner’s oral health. Daily oral health care can help prevent eating difficulties, digestive problems and more dental complications down the road.
Here are some tips caregivers can use to help with oral health:

  • Help the older person brush twice a day with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use a toothbrush with a small head, which makes it easier to clean around the back teeth.
  • Angle the bristles toward the gumline so they clean between the gums and teeth.
  • Brush gently using small circular motions.
  • Brush all sides of each tooth.
  • Brush the tongue.
  • Floss once a day.
  • See a dentist for regular check-ups.
Check out this series of tip sheets from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for more information about adult oral health.
