What’s the connection between Alzheimer’s and Down Syndrome?

Many, but not all, people with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer’s diseasewhen they get older. Scientists are conducting basic studies, biomarker studies, and clinical trials to better understand why some people with Down syndrome develop dementia while others do not, measure cognitive and biological changes, and develop treatments.

Learn more about research opportunities for people with Down syndrome by:
  • Joining DS-Connect®, a voluntary, confidential, online registry from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
  • Searching the National Institute on Aging’s Alzheimer’s disease clinical trials finder.
  • Looking at the National Down Syndrome Society’s directory of studies.
