Background:
The pomegranate fruit has a leathery rind with many little pockets of edible seeds and juice inside. Since ancient times, pomegranate has been a symbol of fertility. It’s been used for a wide variety of health purposes.
How Much Do We Know?
There isn’t a lot of strong scientific evidence on the effects of pomegranate on human health.
What Have We Learned?
There’s preliminary evidence that pomegranate might help ward off infections in dialysis patients, help control dental plaque, and improve some signs of heart disease. However, the evidence for all these possible benefits is very limited.
What Do We Know About Safety?
Some people, particularly those with plant allergies, may be allergic to pomegranate. It’s unclear whether pomegranate interacts with blood-thinning (anticoagulant) drugs. Federal agencies have taken action against companies that deceptively advertised pomegranate products and made drug-like claims for them.
