Good afternoon and welcome to Fox News Today: The Coronavirus Crisis.
Coronavirus bill in limbo as key Senate Republicans are stuck in quarantine; US coronavirus cases surpass 35,000 |
The fate of a nearly $2 trillion coronavirus response bill was further clouded Monday by the fact that five Republican senators remain stuck in quarantine and unable to vote on it. Senate Democrats blocked the bill on Sunday, sparking condemnation from Republicans. Negotiations on the stimulus package are expected to continue Monday. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin vowed that the Trump administration and lawmakers on Capitol Hill are “going to get this done."
Chaos over the bill reigned as the number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. surpassed 35,000 on Monday, making it the nation with the third-highest number of infections in the world, behind only Italy and China. The death toll in the U.S. from the virus has reached 471, the sixth highest in the world.
Meanwhile, U.S equity markets slid after the Federal Reserve took a slew of new actions designed to support the financial markets during the crisis, including purchasing an unlimited amount of Treasury and mortgage-backed securities. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden plans to deliver the first of his own briefings on the global pandemic on Monday, his campaign announced. And the American Red Cross is doubling down on calls for healthy Americans, especially millennials and Gen Zs, to donate blood amid the coronavirus outbreak.
