Update on Coronavirus/COVID-19

Healthy Aging Highlights: Information on healthy aging & more from the National Institute on Aging at NIH.
As you know, the novel coronavirus (also known as COVID-19) is spreading in the United States. While the risk of infection remains very low, it is important to take precautions to reduce your risk of catching the virus. The information below is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Early information out of China, where COVID-19 first started, shows that older adults are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness. If you are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 because of your age or because you have a serious long-term health problem, it is extra important for you to take actions to reduce your risk of getting sick with the disease.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

Here are some steps you can take to help prevent exposure to the virus:

Clean your hands often

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick

  • Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
Visit the CDC website for information on important precautions you can take and ways that you can get prepared as the virus continues to spread.
