President Trump is looking for ways to reopen parts of the economy: Mnuchin

In an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that President Trump is looking at how to reopen parts of the U.S. economy as the coronavirus pandemic continues to force an unprecedented shutdown of businesses throughout the country.

Mnuchin’s comments on Tuesday came as U.S. equity markets soared for a second straight day as the outbreak showed further signs of slowing down in so-called hot spots. Still, the U.S. surpassed 11,000 coronavirus-related deaths, according to most recent data from Johns Hopkins University. In addition, New York state recorded 731 new coronavirus deaths, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday, marking the biggest one-day jump in the outbreak.

Top trade adviser Peter Navarro warned in stark terms about how deadly and economically devastating the coronavirus outbreak could be, weeks before it became a full-blown pandemic, internal White House memos show.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was given oxygen overnight but did not require a ventilator, according to a senior cabinet minister, as the coronavirus-stricken head of government continues treatment in an intensive care unit at a London hospital.

For the first time since the pandemic began, mainland China reported on Tuesday no new coronavirus deaths and a drop in new cases of COVID-19. These developments come one day before Wuhan, the city in central China where the outbreak began, is set to lift its lockdown.

Still, President Trump suggested Tuesday that he might consider cutting funding for the World Health Organization over its handling of the coronavirus crisis and alleged role in helping China downplay the severity of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, the situation in France became more dire as the country reported its highest coronavirus death tally in a 24-hour period since the start of the outbreak. On Monday, France reported 833 more deaths, and the country’s health minister warned the pandemic has not yet reached its peak there. In Japan, coronavirus cases are also surging, prompting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to declare a monthlong state of emergency.
