Alzheimer’s disease disproportionately affects individuals with Down syndrome. In fact, estimates suggest that 50% or more of people with Down syndrome will develop Alzheimer’s disease as they age.
Adults with Down syndrome typically begin to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in their 50s or 60s. Scientists are working hard to understand why people with Down syndrome often develop Alzheimer’s disease when they get older — and why some do not.
