Getting Enough Fluids | National Institute on Aging

Healthy Aging Highlights: Information on healthy aging & more from the National Institute on Aging at NIH.

Water helps you digest your food, absorb nutrients, and then get rid of waste. With age, you might lose some of your sense of thirst, which can make it hard to get enough fluids without making it a habit. Take steps to add drinking water to your routine throughout the day.

Here are some tips to help you get more fluids:
  • Fill containers of water to your goal amount every day and throughout the day pour yourself a glass, allowing you to see your progress and measure how much you’re drinking.
  • Drink fat-free or low-fat milk, water flavored with fruits or vegetables, or other drinks without added sugars.
  • Have a cup of low-sodium soup as an afternoon snack.
