Healthy holiday eating for people with Alzheimer’s

The holiday season can be very exciting but may also disrupt daily mealtime routines for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Changes in mealtimes or types of food being served may be difficult for a person with Alzheimer’s. Here are some tips to help keep the person relaxed while eating:
  • Set the mood with a warm and happy tone.
  • Be patient and give the person enough time to finish the meal.
  • Respect personal food preferences. If the person doesn’t like traditional holiday foods, offer foods they enjoy instead.
  • If the person has always eaten meals at specific times, try to serve meals at those times.
  • Serve meals in a consistent, familiar place and way whenever possible.
  • Avoid new routines, such as serving breakfast to a person who has never routinely eaten breakfast.
