CDC joins WHO in observing first-ever World Patient Safety Day

Recognizing patient safety as a global health priority, 194 countries came together to establish September 17 as World Patient Safety Day at the 72nd World Health Assembly. On this day, every year, WHO will spotlight patient safety to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and spur global solidarity and action. CDC joins WHO in our commitment to protecting patients and making healthcare safer for everyone. Whether you are a patient or caregiver, a healthcare professional, or public health professional, we all have a role to play in ensuring patient safety. CDC develops tools and guidelines for healthcare professionals to provide safe care, and we are committed to listening and learning from the experience of patients and their loved ones to ensure quality care is delivered at every encounter. CDC offers training and education resources for professionals on best practices for patient safety, and information for patients on how to protect themselves and their loved ones from healthcare-associated infections. Today, WHO is launching a global campaign to create awareness of patient safety and urge people to show their commitment to making healthcare safer.
