Food Labels Get a Refresh

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has updated the nutrition facts label on packaged foods and beverages. The new design will make it easier for you to make informed food choices. Learn more about how to read food labels.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is not common, but it causes more deaths each year than any other female reproductive cancer in the U.S. The sooner ovarian cancer is found and treated, the better your chance for recovery.

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders. SCD causes red blood cells to become abnormally shaped, which slows blood flow and prevents oxygen from reaching parts of the body. People with SCD are born with two disease-causing genetic changes (mutations), one from each parent. If a person is born with one disease-causing mutation, they have a less severe condition called sickle cell trait. Genetic counseling can help someone determine if they carry a genetic change that can cause SCD.

fracture is a break, usually in a bone. Fractures can happen because of car accidents, falls, sports injuries, or osteoporosis (a disease that weakens bones). The symptoms may include pain, swelling, or a visible deformity. If you think you have a fracture, you should get medical care right away.

Iodine is Essential

Iodine is a trace element and a nutrient that is needed for cells to change food into energy and for normal thyroid function. Your body does not make iodine so it must come from your diet. Good sources of iodine include seafood, dairy products, kelp, and iodized salt.
