Back pain
Research has been done on yoga for several conditions that involve pain, particularly low-back pain and neck pain.
  • For low-back pain, yoga has been shown to improve pain and function, with effects similar to those of other types of exercise. The American College of Physicians recommends yoga as one of several nondrug approaches that may be helpful as initial treatment for chronic low-back pain.
  • For neck pain, studies have shown that yoga can reduce pain intensity, reduce disability related to the pain, and improve range of motion in the neck.
Less is known about the impact of yoga on other painful conditions, such as arthritis and headaches, because not much research has been done. Therefore, it’s uncertain whether yoga is helpful for these conditions.
