CDC Leading the Way: Scaling Up TB Preventive Treatment to End TB Globally
TB and HIV are a deadly combination. TB is the #1 cause of death for people living with HIV. People living with HIV are also up to 30 times more likely to develop TB disease than someone without the virus. At CDC, we believe addressing HIV and TB co-infection is critical to ending the TB epidemic. That’s why we are leading efforts to scale up TB preventive treatment for people living with HIV in high-burden countries, bringing life-saving treatment to millions living with both diseases.

Data Show Dramatic Progress Against HIV
CDC, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and ICAP at Columbia University recently announced data from the Namibia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment, showing dramatic progress against HIV. Results from NAMPHIA show the country has surpassed global targets for HIV treatment and HIV viral load suppression.

15 Years of Success and Impact Through PEPFAR
In 2003, the U.S. government launched the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR): the largest commitment ever by any nation to address a single disease. Fifteen years later, PEPFAR has saved millions of lives, prevented millions of new infections, and changed the course of the epidemic. CDC is a key implementing agency.

CDC Global HIV and TB Experts on the Frontlines
In 45 countries and regions, CDC experts are working on the frontlines to accelerate countries’ efforts to control HIV and eliminate TB. They are clinicians, prevention specialists, epidemiologists, economists, behavioral scientists, and laboratorians. Dr. Abraham Katana is one of these experts, helping to transform the HIV epidemic in his native land.
