NIAID Now: Fighting Infection with Phages (Video)

A bacteriophage, floating among bacterial cells

As NIAID seeks new ways to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria, one solution might lie with a group of viruses. Some bacteriophages (or “phages” for short) prey on harmful bacteria, and may one day be used in conjunction with antibiotics to treat stubborn or life-threatening bacterial infections. In a new video on the NIAID Now blog, NIAID experts explain how phages function, how they could be used to treat bacterial infections, and how NIAID is supporting research into these helpful viruses.
