Disrupting the Gut Microbiome May Affect Some Immune Responses to Flu Vaccination

The human gut microbiome is a flourishing ecosystem, and NIAID-supported researchers have found that it may influence how the immune system responds to seasonal influenza vaccines. In a new study in Cell, the researchers observed that in people who had low levels of immunity to the types of influenza in the seasonal influenza vaccine, taking antibiotics to kill gut microbes also influenced their immune response to one of the types of influenza in the vaccine.
