Looking for ‘help’ signals in the blood of newborns with HIE

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) occuts when blood and oxygen flow are disrupted around the time of birth and is a serious birth complication for full-term infants.
According to recent research from An N. Massaro, M.D., and colleagues, measuring biomarkers that are produced as the body responds to inflammation and injury, such as IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10, may help to pinpoint newborns who are more vulnerable to suffering lasting brain injury due to disrupted oxygen delivery and blood flow.

In HIE lower heart rate variability signals stressed newborns

In newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), lower heart rate variability correlates with autonomic manifestations of stress shortly after birth, underscoring the value of this biomarker, according to Children’s research presented during the Pediatric Academic Societies 2019 Annual Meeting.

Does mode of childbirth affect autonomic nervous system function?

Preterm babies have reduced autonomic function compared with their full-term peers and also face possible neurodevelopmental impairment later in life. But is there a difference in autonomic nervous system function for full-term babies who undergo labor versus infants delivered via cesarean section?

Training teams for timely NICU evacuation

From June 2015 to August 2017, 213 members of the Children's National NICU staff took part in simulated emergency evacuation drills, honing their skills by practicing with mannequins with varying levels of acuity.
