Alan Kawarai Lefor is a Professor of Surgery at Jichi Medical University in Tochigi Japan. His clinical expertise is in Surgical Oncology and Trauma Surgery. He is currently involved in Surgical Education and Research. He is also conducting research in Theoretical Astrophysics. He serves as a Section Editor for BMC Cancer and BMC Biomedical Engineering.

In this blog, Alan Lefor, Section editor for BMC Cancer, shares some of the recent developments and emerging research areas in the fight against pancreatic cancer, including his own research modeling tumor growth.

Cancer of the pancreas continues to be an active area of research. It is a common cancer all over the world and continues to be one of the most lethal. About 99% of patients with cancer of the pancreas have adenocarcinoma, a type of malignant tumor, and the 5-year survival rate for patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is about 3-5%.
