Gene Therapy Restores Immunity in Infants with SCID

Gene therapy can safely correct the immune systems of infants newly diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening inherited immunodeficiency called X-linked SCID, a clinical trial has found. The new approach, co-developed by NIAID scientists, appears safer and more effective than previously tested gene therapy strategies for X-linked SCID. The findings appear in The New England Journal of Medicine.
