Delivering certain microbes to food-allergic mice suppressed food allergy, scientists report today in Nature Medicine. Further analysis in the NIAID-supported study revealed that the introduction of therapeutic bacteria activated a pathway in regulatory T cells that was deficient in both mice and infants with food allergy—further illuminating the role the microbiome may play in the development and treatment of this disease.
