There’s widespread interest in using cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), for pain, but little research has been done to find out whether they’re effective and safe for this purpose.
Nine new research projects funded by NCCIH will help science catch up. These projects will investigate the potential pain-relieving properties and mechanisms of action of substances in cannabis, including both cannabinoids and terpenes.
The focus of the new studies will be on substances other than tetrahydrocannbinol (THC—the component of marijuana that makes people high). THC may help relieve pain, but many patients want to manage pain without its psychoactive effects or other worries such as dependence or risk of addiction.
