Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder with symptoms such as trembling, stiffness, and poor balance and coordination. It occurs when brain cells fail to produce enough of the chemical dopamine. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease begin gradually and become worse over time.

There’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but medicines and deep brain stimulation (a surgical procedure) may help control symptoms for a limited period. Some people with Parkinson’s disease also try complementary health approaches.

Several mind and body practices have been studied for Parkinson’s disease. There’s limited evidence that tai chi may help improve balance in some people with Parkinson’s disease. Interventions involving dance have shown promise in helping to improve balance, mobility, and quality of life. Research on acupuncture and massage therapy is limited; there’s no strong evidence that either of these approaches helps to reduce symptoms.
