Scientists Work Toward a Rapid Point-of-Care Diagnostic Test for Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose because it causes a wide range of symptoms, from fever and rash to neurologic and cardiac symptoms and joint pain. Current Lyme disease tests also can miss an infection and provide a false negative, if they are performed too early. In a new study, NIAID-supported researchers have identified a new set of biomarkers for Lyme disease. These biomarkers could be used to develop better, faster tests for Lyme disease, which could provide more specific results in the early stages of infection.
