A Global Health Concern

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It's most often caused by a virus but can also be caused by drug or alcohol use. Vaccines are available for some types of hepatitis.
About 325 million people worldwide are living with hepatitis and many more are undiagnosed. This is why hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment are essential for eliminating viral hepatitis.

The Different Types of Hepatitis

The most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
  • Hepatitis A spreads through contact with an infected person's stool. It is vaccine-preventable.
  • Hepatitis B spreads by contact with an infected person's blood, semen, or other body fluid. It is vaccine-preventable.
  • Hepatitis C usually spreads through contact with infected blood. There is no vaccine for hepatitis C. The best way to prevent Hepatitis C is to avoid behaviors that can spread the disease.
Hepatitis D and hepatitis E are serious liver diseases that are found worldwide, but are uncommon In the United States.
If you're planning to travel internationally, check with your healthcare provider to see if you should be vaccinated for hepatitis A and B.
