May is National Arthritis Awareness Month.

A variety of complementary health approaches have been studied to see whether they can improve osteoarthritis symptoms:
  • Participating in tai chi may improve pain, stiffness, and joint function in people with knee osteoarthritis.
  • Acupuncture may help relieve osteoarthritis pain.
  • A small amount of evidence suggests that massage therapy may be helpful for osteoarthritis.
  • Although many studies have been done on glucosamine and chondroitin, it’s still uncertain whether these dietary supplements have a meaningful impact on joint pain or structure.
  • The evidence on other natural products promoted for osteoarthritis, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), and S-adenosyl-L-methionine, is too limited for any conclusions to be reached.
