Although herbal products play an important role in traditional Chinese medicine, mind and body practices are also part of this medical tradition.

One mind and body practice used in traditional Chinese medicine is acupuncture, a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, usually by inserting thin needles through the skin. Research suggests that acupuncture may help ease some types of pain, but its value for other health issues is uncertain.

Tai chi is also part of traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi combines certain postures, gentle movements, mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. Research findings suggest that practicing tai chi may improve balance and stability in older people and those with Parkinson’s disease, reduce pain from knee osteoarthritis, and help people cope with fibromyalgia or back pain.

Both acupuncture and tai chi are generally safe practices when performed correctly.
