Two Programs Can Help with Epilepsy Self-Management
Learn about two epilepsy self-management programs that have shown success in improving quality of life and reducing levels of depression in people with epilepsy. Researchers from CDC’s Prevention Research Centers (PRC) developed the programs. Both are available online at no cost.
  • TIME—Targeted Self-Management for Epilepsy and Mental IllnessDeveloped by researchers at Case Western Reserve University PRC, study participants showed a significant decrease in the severity of their depression symptoms. A key program feature is that participants meet directly with peers who are successfully managing their own epilepsy and depression.
  • HOBSCOTCH—Home-Based Self-Management and Cognitive Training Changes Lives. Developed by researchers at Dartmouth College PRC, study participants had significantly less seizure worry, more energy, and reported significant improvements in some mental abilities such as paying attention after participating in the program for 8 weeks.
Epilepsy is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and affects people of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds. It affects 3.4 million Americans and is connected with substantial disability, reduced quality of life, stigma, and premature death.
Dartmouth College PRC and Case Western Reserve University PRC are part of the Managing Epilepsy Well Network (MEW). Learn more about MEW Network.
