“Microbes in Our Gut: Emerging Insights on Health and Disease” is the focus of NCCIH’s Spring 2019 Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series.
On March 14 at 11 a.m. ET, Dr. Sean F. Brady of The Rockefeller University will present a talk entitled “Watch Where You Step, There’s New Chemistry Everywhere.” Dr. Brady will describe new techniques that make it possible to study bacteria that can’t be grown in the laboratory and explain how these methods may lead to the identification of new antibiotics and better understanding of the human microbiome.
On May 9 at 11 a.m. ET, Dr. Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello of Rutgers University will speak on “Gut Microbes in a Disruptive Age.” Dr. Dominguez-Bello will explain how the microbial community in our digestive tracts is transmitted through generations, how various aspects of modern life may change this community, and the impact that these changes may have on human health.
On June 10 at 11 a.m. ET, Dr. Isaac Chiu of Harvard Medical School will present the lecture “Bacteria Get on Your Nerves: How Bugs Modulate Pain and Immunity.” Dr. Chiu will tell us about ways in which bacteria interact with the nervous and immune systems and how the growing knowledge in this area may lead to new treatments for chronic pain and inflammatory diseases.
