The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded funding to support research that explores the potential of music for treating a wide range of conditions as part of the Sound Health Initiative. Sound Health aims to advance our understanding of music’s mechanism of action in the brain and how it may be applied broadly to treat symptoms of disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and chronic pain. Sound Health is a partnership between NIH and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in association with the National Endowment for the Arts, to explore the brain’s relationship with music. It was launched in 2017.
