HerbList App ginger

Have you checked out NCCIH’s HerbList™ app, our new app for research-based information about the safety and effectiveness of herbal products? It’s available now for both iOS and Android. We’d like to share some of the information you can get through the app. Today, we’re highlighting the herb ginger.

People use ginger as a dietary supplement for nausea and arthritis. There’s some evidence that ginger may help relieve pregnancy-related nausea. Ginger may also help to control nausea related to cancer chemotherapy when used in addition to conventional anti-nausea medication. However, it’s unclear whether ginger is helpful for nausea from other causes or for arthritis symptoms.

Ginger can have mild side effects in some people such as abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea, and gas. It may have special risks for people with gallstone disease and those who take anticoagulants. Although several studies have found no evidence of harm from taking ginger during pregnancy, it’s uncertain whether ginger is always safe for pregnant women. If you’re considering using ginger while you’re pregnant, consult your health care provider.
