Stand STEADI to Prevent Falls CDC continues to stand STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries) as we observe Fall Prevention Awareness Day on the first day of fall, on Saturday, September 22, 2018. As part of the observance this year, CDC is introducing new tools and resources to assist nationwide fall prevention efforts. New and Updated Resources STEADI Tools now in Spanish & Customizable versions: Spanish versions of the updated STEADI patient brochures are now available, as well as customizable versions in English. Partners can now add their contact name and information to the fall prevention educational materials they share with older Americans and their caretakers. Published Article: A new study, “Implementation of the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries Initiative in Primary Care: An Outcome Evaluation,” was published in The Gerontologist. The study demonstrated that implementation of STEADI fall risk screening and prevention strategies in the primary care setting can reduce fall-related hospitalizations among older adults. Given that an average cost of a fall-related hospitalization is over $30,000, and that 10,000 Americans turn age 65 daily, these findings are particularly noteworthy. STEADI Videos: Coming soon, the new “Stand STEADI” video series will highlight healthcare teams and programs successfully implementing fall prevention. The first two videos of the series will be released soon and feature the first accredited geriatric emergency department in New Jersey (St. Joseph’s Healthcare System in New Jersey), and a new citywide strategy by Baltimore’s City Health Department to use real-time data to identify neighborhoods in need of fall prevention activities. New Funding Research CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control anticipates awarding extramural research cooperative agreements totaling approximately $2.25 million this fall.
