Vision Impairment and Older Adult Falls

Each year, one in four Americans 65 and older experiences a fall, the leading cause of injury among older adults, and impaired vision more than doubles this risk.
However, these simple steps can help reduce your chance of falls and protect your vision:
  • Do exercises to improve strength and balance, such as tai chi.
  • Wear sturdy, nonslip footwear that fits correctly.
  • Get a dilated eye exam at least once a year.
  • Talk to your doctor about medication side effects, such as dizziness, that could increase your risk of falls.
  • Make your home safer by using double-sided tape on rugs, making light switches easily accessible, and installing a handrail in the shower.
This May, find out more about reducing your risk for falls and taking care of your vision health in our latest feature.
