Bridging Healthcare and Rare Disease

More than 7,000 rare diseases have been identified yet medical professionals do not always recognize or encounter rare disease patients.

Each year, Global Genes matches eligible medical students with a rare disease patient or family, giving them an opportunity to:
  • Learn firsthand about rare disease diagnosis
  • Connect the rare disease and healthcare communities
  • Build compassion for underrepresented communities
Apply to Matching Program
We are now accepting applications year-round for the RARE Compassion Project. Medical students will be matched with patients or families on a quarterly basis.
In accompaniment with the RARE Compassion Project, participating medical students are invited to submit an essay about their experience for consideration to receive the David R. Cox Scholarship for Rare Compassion. Read 2018 scholarship recipient, Kristin Hunt’s essay.

Essay submissions open May 20 and the deadline to submit is June 14.
