World Health Day 2016: Diabetes
World Health Day, the main global health awareness-raising campaign, is held each year on April 7. In 2016, WHO has chosen as a topic diabetes, which affects more than 415 million adults worldwide and is threatening the wellbeing and sustainable development of our societies.
On World Health Day 2016 WHO will release a new report on diabetes, with the intention of scaling up prevention, strengthening care and enhance surveillance.  These messages will be promoted through a social media campaign.
As the main diabetes partner for WHO, IDF is closely collaborating in the preparations of the World Health Day campaign. In the coming weeks, we will share with you more information on what you can do to support World Health Day 2016.
IDF Parliamentarians Network meeting in Vancouver (28-30 November 2015)
The Second Forum of the Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network (IDF-PDGN) was held at the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver from 28-30 November 2015. Elected officials from Parliaments of over thirty countries, who have a particular interest in improving diabetes policies, met to share successes and talk about the challenges.
The Forum theme was The Human, Social and Economic Impact of Diabetes and culminated in the signing of The Vancouver Proclamation. This committed PDGN to raise awareness and demand that all governments prioritise the United Nations Global Health Targets for diabetes to improve prevention, diagnosis and the expensive and unnecessary complications and early deaths of those with the condition.
The PDGN was established in Melbourne in 2013 where for the first time in history parliamentarians with a special interest in diabetes created a network to work together to make a positive difference. For further information about the network, please check the PDGN website and the newsletter.
IDF 2015 calls to action on diabetes
In 2015 IDF launched three calls to action on diabetes to global leaders on occasion of the G7G20 andSustainable Development Goals Summits. The call to action messages were promoted through different social media campaigns, which resulted in a high level of engagement of the online diabetes community and the general public.
Many of you supported these online campaigns and shared these messages with your respective networks. IDF is interested in your feedback, so we can improve the campaigns and be more effective in the future. If you have any comment for us, please send them to Beatriz.YanezJimenez@idf.org.
IDF and social media: follow and interact with us!
In 2015 IDF increased its advocacy activity on social media, notably through the IDF calls to action. We are happy to announce that our number of supporters has rapidly grown over the last months; we are now more than 31,000 on Twitter and 62,000 onFacebook! This is fantastic news because, the wider is our network, the more people will receive diabetes-related messages that contribute to increase awareness and empower the diabetes community.
If you do not follow IDF on social media yet, we invite you to do so and to share our messages with your network. You can also share with us the projects you are developing on your community, by sending an e-mail to communications@idf.org. We will promote them on our social media channels whenever possible.
“Carbonating the World: The Marketing and Health Impact of Sugar Drinks in Low- and Middle-income Countries”
The University of Washington and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have released the report “Carbonating the world”, which explains how the soft drinks industry has increased its marketing efforts in low- and middle-income countries to compensate the decline in sales in Europe and the United States. This is having a clear impact on health, with an increase in NCDs prevalence that is challenging the frequently saturated health systems of those countries.
One of the report’s recommendations is that governments levy excise taxes in sugary drinks and dedicate the revenues to develop health programmes, something IDF also recommends in its Framework for Action on Sugar.
You can download the “Carbonating the World” report here. The executive summary can be accessed here.
