La carga que representa el cáncer
En 2016, se calculó que 1.685.210 personas recibirán un diagnóstico de cáncer en los Estados Unidos y que 595.690 personas morirán por esta enfermedad.[1] Si bien las cifras de incidencia y mortalidad por cáncer ayudan a definir la magnitud de la carga que esta enfermedad representa para la sociedad, estos indicadores no describen completamente el efecto en los pacientes y sus familias. Además de la morbilidad física que causa el cáncer, esta enfermedad se relaciona, con frecuencia, con sufrimiento emocional y una reducción general de la calidad de vida.[2] También se ha observado que el cáncer es un factor de preocupación financiera. En un estudio con base en la población en el área del este de Washington, se emparejaron 197.840 pacientes de cáncer con un número igual de controles por edad, sexo y código postal. Los pacientes de cáncer fueron 2,6 más propensos a declararse en quiebra que los controles sin cáncer (P < 0,05).[3]
